Optional update arrived this morning via MS update (Set to notify me)---

Intel - System - 6/26/2016 12.00.00 AM - 14.35.69

Information is unhelpful to say the least. Can anyone shed some light on
what it may be.

I'm trying to reproduce this, but (of course)
Windows Update just sits there with the moving
green line. And won't list anything.

I might have to wait 24 hours before it
shows up. And that update might not even
be applicable to mine.

You sure this is a Microsoft notification for a Windows update and
perhaps not instead some other update checker's notification, like for
the mobo driver chipset?

I've seen plenty of pre-builts and even users install a software package
for the mobo chipset that includes a resident chipset update checker.
When I got my current home PC as a salvaged unit from a friend (who
didn't want to repair the hardware), it came with an OEM copy of both
Windows 7 and Office so I got a boost in the software right away. I
fixed or replaced the hardware that was already bad or went bad soon
after, and started with a fresh install. Acer's factory-time image
including their Live Updater program. No thanks. One, I'll do the
checking for firmware updates but only if I feel there is problems or
deficiencies in the current firmware and, two, the lastest is not always
the greatest so I need to research if a new firmware update is what I
really want or even need. On some Dells (pre-builts obviously) they
dump a ton of their maintenance software of which one is to check for
mobo updates. Doing surgery on the mobo is not something that should be
taken lightly but many users would see there was a newer version of the
chipset package and install it - and then have problems which might not
manifest themself for months so the users don't associate the problems
with the chipset driver update.

I would hide that update until you know what it is. If a computer is
already working, a new driver might make it not working.

I take it that when you highlight that entry and click on More Info that
what it you get Microsoft's stupid generic page rather than one that
actually describes what the driver is (file name) and what it is for.

Yes, No description is available so I am treating it as iffy until I can
find out more about it. The last 18 months of MS carrying on has made me
very cautious. Will hide it for now.
A google search did not help either.

Intel - System - 6/26/2016 12.00.00 AM - 14.35.1.69

Here's a hit. Someone did the legwork. Auf Deutsch.

http://borncity.com/win/2016/12/06/windows-optional-update-intel-system-6282016/

This is the entry on the Catalog Server.
I tried the Catalog Server but got nothing in
my previous searches. Here it is, for dissection
(download, take CAB apart with 7ZIP, open INF in Notepad
and so on).

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Intel%20%E2%80%93%20System%20%E2%80%93%206%2F28%2F2016

ACPI\INT3394 <--- ACPI object identifier, Intel branded

XtuAcpiDriver.sys

Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility Device Service

The borncity poster reports:

"Inspecting the .cab file, I found an ACPI driver
and a PCI driver. The strings located within the
INF driver installer files are.

SPSVCINST_ASSOCSERVICE= 0x00000002
ManufacturerName="Intel" ; TODO: add ManufacturerName
DiskName = "ACPI and BIOS Control"
XtuAcpiDriver.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility Device Driver"

The Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility tool may be found here.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/de/download/24075/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-Intel-XTU-

So that would be a driver to make a Tuning Utility of
some sort work. ACPI drivers are used to "punch through"
the Ring 3 / Ring 0 security wall. (You cannot talk to
hardware directly from Ring 3.) The BIOS developer
knows there is hardware the OS/apps need to reach,
an ACPI object is defined, then when the OS calls
in, there is a way for the two parts to communicate.
It's considered a better scheme than "giveio.sys"
used by third-party developers in similar situations.

Example text:

Intel Extreme Tuning Utility XTU 6.2.0.19

Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel XTU) is a simple
Windows-based performance tuning software for novice
and experienced enthusiasts to overclock, monitor,
and stress a system.

Here's a kid playing with his XTU.

What I notice in the screen, is a relationship [branding]
to Microstar International (MSI). Whether this package
is created by MSI and distributed by Intel, or vice
versa, I don't know. MSI has distributed a utility for
video cards in the past (Afterburner?) for a similar
purpose. All this link shows, is the kinda stuff
MSI likes to distribute/give away. I've seen to
references to MSI so far, but I don't know if
only MSI branded products will be affected or
receive the driver update or not.

So someone getting this proposed update from Microsoft is likely due to
them installing the bundleware (or the OEM using an image to prep
multiple hosts) that comes with the mobo. My guess is this update is
for pre-builts that came with all the bundleware whether the user wants
the extras or not which also means the tools are put in the hands of
noobs that could easily destroy their hardware with overclocking, wrong
voltages, or incorrect fan speed. A loaded gun in every box of Cherios.

My suspicion is that it appears only on enthusiast motherboards.
Ones with a chipset SKU intended for overclockers. Intel marketing
decides which SKUs do what.

Device Manager sees the "INT3394" object and
tries to find a driver for it. I don't have one
of those on my system, which is why Win7 didn't
offer that update when it finally listed the updates.

This is similar to the AsusTek ATK0110 which people
find on their motherboards, and can never remember
what to do with it :-)

Or the Q45 chipsets with Management Engine junk.
Which actually has an element of danger to it. Some
people are getting exposed to that when they buy
refurbished offlease Dell boxes.

CPU, running Win 7 Pro 64bit OS. I deliberately chose the non overclock
CPU as I never overclock any of my boxes.

The XTU software you mentioned would not be much use to me for
overclocking in that case.

My question I guess is, why is MS pushing this as an update when it is
not. If I want a tuning piece of software then I will search out one and
install it and use it.

What in my box would trigger an offer of this "Update". My motherboard
is a Gigabyte not an MSI. Very strange.

For now it gets hidden.
Thanks for all your research

Optional update arrived this morning via MS update (Set to notify me)---
Intel - System - 6/26/2016 12.00.00 AM - 14.35.69
Information is unhelpful to say the least. Can anyone shed some light on
what it may be.
A few others on the Win 7 forums have received this update as well.
http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/403270-strange-update.html
No answers there either !!!
Note: You did not copy the ".1." part of the number correctly.
This cost a lot of time! It throws off searches. I get nothing
when this happens.
Intel - System - 6/26/2016 12.00.00 AM - 14.35.1.69
Here's a hit. Someone did the legwork. Auf Deutsch.
http://borncity.com/win/2016/12/06/windows-optional-update-intel-system-6282016/
This is the entry on the Catalog Server.
I tried the Catalog Server but got nothing in
my previous searches. Here it is, for dissection
(download, take CAB apart with 7ZIP, open INF in Notepad
and so on).
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Intel%20%E2%80%93%20System%20%E2%80%93%206%2F28%2F2016
ACPI\INT3394 <--- ACPI object identifier, Intel branded
XtuAcpiDriver.sys
Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility Device Service
"Inspecting the .cab file, I found an ACPI driver
and a PCI driver. The strings located within the
INF driver installer files are.
SPSVCINST_ASSOCSERVICE= 0x00000002
ManufacturerName="Intel" ; TODO: add ManufacturerName
DiskName = "ACPI and BIOS Control"
XtuAcpiDriver.DeviceDesc = "Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility Device Driver"
The Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility tool may be found here.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/de/download/24075/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-Intel-XTU-
So that would be a driver to make a Tuning Utility of
some sort work. ACPI drivers are used to "punch through"
the Ring 3 / Ring 0 security wall. (You cannot talk to
hardware directly from Ring 3.) The BIOS developer
knows there is hardware the OS/apps need to reach,
an ACPI object is defined, then when the OS calls
in, there is a way for the two parts to communicate.
It's considered a better scheme than "giveio.sys"
used by third-party developers in similar situations.
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility XTU 6.2.0.19
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel XTU) is a simple
Windows-based performance tuning software for novice
and experienced enthusiasts to overclock, monitor,
and stress a system.
Here's a kid playing with his XTU.
http://youtu.be/yFOwslwebC0
What I notice in the screen, is a relationship [branding]
to Microstar International (MSI). Whether this package
is created by MSI and distributed by Intel, or vice
versa, I don't know. MSI has distributed a utility for
video cards in the past (Afterburner?) for a similar
purpose. All this link shows, is the kinda stuff
MSI likes to distribute/give away. I've seen to
references to MSI so far, but I don't know if
only MSI branded products will be affected or
receive the driver update or not.
(Stuff MSI likes to make...)

My Apologies to all for not putting the "1" part of the number in.

If you have a utility like Lavalys Everest or
similar, you *might* be able to get a listing
of all the PNP (Plug and Play) info. Some
items are passed as ACPI objects by the BIOS.
Your Windows Update item may be offered,
if your BIOS is showing

ACPI\INT3394

That should be the trigger.

I would be concerned if your hardware
was *not* showing that. As then it would
mean Windows Update wasn't working properly.

It would be nice if the BIOS had a setting
to turn off special items like that. Like,
disable the ATK0110 on a couple of my systems.
But, that doesn't seem to be an option with
this identification scheme.

I did a check with devcon on my other system

devcon findall *

and I don't have an INT3394 on it. I notice
Win10 *still* doesn't have devcon.exe on it.
That's the command line version of Device Manager.
Presumably the INT3394 would show up in Device Manager,
somehow.

The 32-bit version of devcon is easy to find.
The IA64 version is not the version for PCs.
The 64-bit version is more difficult to get.
I keep mine on this machine as "devcon64.exe"
so I don't get it mixed up with my 32-bit copy.

My two Lenovo laptops are Intel Inside.
They get Intel updates all the time. Half the time the updates don't say what they
are. I always hide them regardless. The hardware is functioning correctly.
No need to make it not function via an unneeded update.

Download size: 3.0 MB
Intel System driver update released in March 2016

I have hidden them all until I can get a satisfactory explanation about
what they are for.
My device manager shows that all devices have appropriate drivers
installed ie no yellow flags indicating that a driver is required.

The Lenovo laptops get Intel ups from MS all the time.
I never take time to look at them. I just hide them.
My comps are running correctly, no desire to make them run poorly or not run at all.

No. I downloaded the "Intel update utility" and it showed no driver
updates required.

on another site --

https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/5jjxlx/anybody_else_getting_a_strange_windows_update_for/?st=ix6scwow&sh=a138c89c

I saw this comment --

"I got another one yesterday after hiding the original. There are
theories that these unexplained updates are intended to compromise the
stability of non win10 machines with the intent to make you upgrade.
Seems far fetched but you're not the only one with this story and the
more time that goes by without an official explanation, the more
suspicious it seems."

I does not take long for conspiracy theories to start.
The way Ms has acted in the last year gives one cause for concern.

I don't get Intel related updates on this machine. The only Intel on this machine
is cpu and chipset.
The laptops are all Intel inside: cpu, gpu, usb, vid, wifi, Ethernet, hddshocks, etc.
They get MS/Intel update requests often.
I have not checked to see what is calling home. Could be all the devices constantly
call Intel or MS for updates.

The third one is "Intel WatchDog Timer" ACPI\INT3F0D

The second one is a puzzle. It's for yellow-bang removal.
The "Include=usbport.inf" part, means it actually calls the
Microsoft driver to finish the job. The only purpose of this
file, is to label USB items in Device Manager.

Something tells me you need to disable "update hardware drivers".

Perhaps you have really new hardware, and the
OS is attempting to pull in related material?

Remember that there was initially a plan for Intel
to not support Win7 on their new processors, but
between Intel and Microsoft, they relented and
agreed to provide another year of support. Maybe
these items you're seeing, are a side effect of
this agreement ?

You would think the watchdog would have been there
from the initial install. Whereas the USB one, that's
the one that makes me think it's related to new chipset
or something.

Just a guess,

Maybe this is MS setting up things to take away support for Win 7 on new
processors. I am running an i5 Haswell processor.
Another thought is that this is a glitch in MS's new updating system,
and I am getting these updates in error.

Optional update arrived this morning via MS update (Set to notify me)---
Intel - System - 6/26/2016 12.00.00 AM - 14.35.69
Information is unhelpful to say the least. Can anyone shed some light on
what it may be.

Did you install any of the Intel software that came with the MB?
Intel® Rapid Start Technology
Intel® Smart Connect Technology
Intel® Smart Response Technology
Intel® Small Business Advantage
Onboard graphics is Intel. EFI bios.
My guess is that either the Intel software and/or hardware has reported home
or MS did a scan of your computer during authorization.

I had another idea, that maybe this is a side effect of
installing one of the recent rollups, and it has some
backported code from a later OS that considers hardware
drivers. And *that* code is selecting these updates. Perhaps
that's why people with systems not patched up to the latest
rollup, are not calling up the same updates.

Using my copy of Lavalys Everest, I would be listing
the ACPI objects, and see if the system actually
presents "ACPI\INT3F0D". And that causes these updates
to appear. If any of the updates coming in, does not
have a corresponding PNP identifier that triggered it,
it should be reported to a Microsoft forum dealing with
Windows Update for correction.

Some time ago, a touchpad update was delivered to *everyone*,
because the touchpad driver happens to match every HID in
existence. It borked keyboards, until Microsoft pulled it.
So occasionally the delivery system (and/or the driver itself)
delivers rubbish, and you have to spot "trends" in the news,
to know not to install items like that.

Because these can be looked up on catalog.update.microsoft.com,
it should be possible to examine each of them and see what is
in the INF file of the driver.

The Intel USB driver package in Maurice's list, indicates the
logic doing this is wrong, because he cannot possibly be
missing USB labels. And these updates should not be coming in.

On my Win10 setup, Win10 for the longest while *did not*
label anything Intel on my machine properly. I waited a few
months, and because Microsoft was not fixing it, installed
my own INFINST download from downloadcenter.intel.com to take
care of it. So I know that Win10 was "under-cooked" on these
drivers. This Win7 response seems to be an over-compensation
based on some Win10 mistakes. Since the update delivery system
is being migrated as we speak (using code from elsewhere one
would presume), it's logical to be seeing these sorts of
mistakes. I'm specifically trying to avoid taking Win7 rollups
after September on purpose, so I won't be pulling in this
stuff or any CEIP materials or Universal Application support
if I can help it. There's nothing in the App Store for me that
I care about - I have no money for 200,000 copies of
Angry Birds :-) Or copies of Solitaire with advertising
in them.

I am beginning to think that it is a problem at MS with their update
system. Only Two of the eight computers I look after are getting these
strange updates, so far.
Is their anywhere in MS where I can tell them what is happening and ask
for clarification.

I cannot refine my search any finer than that. It looks
like I'd have to log in with an MSA to take a screen shot
of anything more interesting.

So it would appear they have a "Windows-other" forum and an "Update"
section. As best as I can determine.

I've never used Answers myself. I try not to use my MSA for
more than the minimal functions (Win10 Insider Edition logon).

And the "bug reporting" here might not be the intended audience either.

I have reproduced your symptoms.

I finally got Win7 to present the update list,
and I have three waiting for me. They are
different than yours. One of them is probably
the USB package. A smaller one, I cannot identify
it because the Intel number is 0.0.0.0 and that
cannot possibly be right.

So you are not the only one to see this.

Attempts to click the "More information" link
take you to a dead page on the Microsoft site.
So that doesn't help.

This behavior might be related to one of the
monthly rollups. As I had to install a
rollup to get past the long long WU delay.

Optional update arrived this morning via MS update (Set to notify me)---
Intel - System - 6/26/2016 12.00.00 AM - 14.35.69
Information is unhelpful to say the least. Can anyone shed some light on
what it may be.
Hi All,
Two more of these updates arrived this morning --
Intel - Ports - 6/20/2016 12:00:00 AM - 11.6.0.1009
Download size: 23 KB
Update type: Optional
Intel Ports driver update released in June 2016
INTEL - System - 10/3/2016 12:00:00 AM - 10.1.1.38
Download size: 58 KB
Update type: Optional
INTEL System driver update released in October 2016
I wonder when it will stop, or we will get an explanation.
Until then -- they are hidden

Is their anywhere in MS where I can tell them what is happening and
ask for clarification.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_other-update/what-information-to-post-in-the-windows-update/1467f44b-ee27-4f7d-98d7-f1c4b35b3395

Thanks for your help. I am going to adopt the wait and see approach
while hiding the updates until an answer comes to light
I have reproduced your symptoms.
I finally got Win7 to present the update list,
and I have three waiting for me. They are
different than yours. One of them is probably
the USB package. A smaller one, I cannot identify
it because the Intel number is 0.0.0.0 and that
cannot possibly be right.
So you are not the only one to see this.
Attempts to click the "More information" link
take you to a dead page on the Microsoft site.
So that doesn't help.
This behavior might be related to one of the
monthly rollups. As I had to install a
rollup to get past the long long WU delay.
Paul
What do we do then -- try to uninstall one of the rollups or .......
You could.

Since I have Windows Update turned off on Windows 7,
those Optional items won't be installed here. I
installed my rollup as an MSU from catalog.update.microsoft.com .
I could uninstall it, but I doubt in the larger scheme
of things, it would matter.

After the rollup was installed, there was one "security"
update which was a Servicing Stack. I haven't installed
that one. That showed up in Windows Update, after
the December Rollup was installed.

This morning I checked my wife's Dell Inspiron laptop and it is now
showing two of these intel updates and I am sure that they are different
to the ones on mine.
When I get back to the six computers I maintain where I do some
volunteer work I expect that these weird updates will begin to appear on
them (one has already got one update -- the others were clean) I will
not know until I start on January the 9th 2017. we are in recess at the
moment.
I hope that MS will have fixed the problem by then, or given us an
explanation of what is going on. Surely they must be aware of the
problem by now.

I am not aware of any scan done during authorization.
