Discussion:
WinAmp (5.9.2) and .m4a files

I have the above version of WinAmp, and it plays some .m4a files, but
not all.

The ones it doesn't, it still opens, displays the title and length, and
lets me edit two tagfuls of metadata (Basic Info, and Artwork), but if I
click the play button, the position slider appears briefly, and that's
all.

Any ideas? I presume there are two (or more) CoDecs involved, and my
WinAmp only has one of them. (I can play them in other software -
GoldWave, VLC, WMP, MPC, IrfanView, ..., so I obviously _have_ the
necessary CoDec, just WinAmp is not making the appropriate match.)

Have you tried Wacup at <https://getwacup.com/>? It's based on Winamp.

that Hamas stop fighting? And where are the demonstrations

Thanks; it does play a .m4a that WinAmp 5.9.2 doesn't, and looks
sufficiently like WinAmp. I will add it to my arsenal.

Also try XMPlay. Very similar to WinAmp and but more lightweight. i.e.
compact GUI, and plugin based (codec, DSP, output, visualization, skin).
.M4A support is provided via its AAC plugin which includes file extension
AAC, M4A, M4B, and MP4.

Scroll down for list of skins then plugins. More plugins are available in
its support site.

Thanks; I've added that too. I was a bit nervous about all the talk of
plugins, but it played the first two .m4a files I tried (that WinAmp
5.9.2 doesn't) without needing any.

I was amused and pleased to see both Wacup and Xmplayer have the
original WinAmp "skin" (included for Wacup, available for Xmplayer).

Thanks. The link in that to "Winamp Essentials Pack" no longer works of
course, but it did at least show me where to look for what CoDec is in
use. (Just the normal file info, Alt-3, but I'd never noticed it was
there before.) The first won't-play .m4a I tried shows MPEG-4 AAC HE.

(Won't-play in WinAmp 5.9.2 that is.) I've just found one that _does_
play in my Win Amp, and that's MPEG-4 AAC LC - only very little
different (in CoDec name anyway)!

It's not what you were asking, but perhaps it's worth mentioning again*
that at least up to Windows 7, Windows Media Player can be persuaded to
play a great many of the less common formats by installing suitable
Direct-X Codec filters.

[* Previously I've given the following instructions both originally here
and later copied to uk.tech.digital-tv.]

"This is what I installed (beware line wrapped links, and don't forget
to AV scan anything downloaded, although all the below seem to be
respectable sources):

FLAC: flac113b.exe
https://sourceforge.net/projects/flac/files/flac-win/flac-1.1.3-win/

APE: MAC_416.exe
http://www.monkeysaudio.com/download.html

OGG:
Either:
oggcodecs_0.71.0946.exe
(probably also more recent version at link)
https://www.xiph.org/downloads/
Or:
opencodecs_0.85.17777.exe
https://xiph.org/dshow/downloads/

QT: QuickTime_Alternative_322.exe
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/quicktime_alternative.htm
... but see also about its withdrawal in Wikipedia ...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime_Alternative

REAL: Real_Alternative_202.exe
http://www.free-codecs.com/real_alternative_download.htm
... but see also the above Wikipedia article.

SHN: SHN Plugin Setup.exe
(Can't now find whence I originally downloaded)

To get WMP to play a file in any of the above formats, run the codec
installer above, then <rt-click> a target file and choose Open With,
Other Programs, WMP - at this stage you probably want to deselect
'Always use the selected program ...' at least until you've proved it
works - then WMP throws up a message like ...

'The selected file has an extension (.flac) that is not recognised by
WMP ...

Do you want the Player to try to play this content?'

... again probably leave 'Don't ask me again ...' unchecked for now,
but when you click Yes WMP should go off and be able to find the
codec, and therefore play the file. Then you can repeat the procedure
to select not being prompted in future, and then <rt-click> the target
file again to change the default program to play it, if you so wish."

I noticed the same thing with MKVs. IWISOFT would handle the earlier ones, but not the recent ones
I have a feeling that the mkv developers introduced new coding AFTER Iwisoft stopped updating
program
Handbrake handled all. but is an incredible resource hog.

I pulled an .m4a at random and played it in my Winamp. No Problem. But that tells nothing, you said
yours would play some of them.

But, I think the same thing occurred where current programs are updated to any new m4a coding but not
old ones

Can you point to one by URL that WILL NOT PLAY?

MKV is a container.

Changes to "CODECs" can result in players
refusing to decode content. If a CODEC has
a new profile, maybe that can't be played.

Handbrake has had hardware acceleration added,
which could help it transcode faster, but in the
past it was not generally known for being
efficient at this sort of thing. I bet I could
accelerate your transcode, with a custom FFMPEG
command. I've tested this before on my video card(s).
Even my 1050Ti toy card can encode to hollywood formats
(it's such a toy, the fan doesn't spin).

You really need to use something like MediaInfo
or perhaps if nothing else is available, FFProbe
or FFPlay. They might well provide a terse summary
of the codecs in a file.

For example, my TV tuner card, the .wtv files from
that, had about four streams total, and one
stream is video, one stream English audio. The other
streams might vary in composition, from one hour
to the next, at the TV station. Some players
can figure this out OK (like I would expect VLC
to play all my .wtv files), while others don't
get the idea of labeled streams, and they might
try to play the subtitles as the audio or something.

So while VLC figures it out, if I use the FFMPEG player, it's like this:

ffplay -ast 2 -vst 3 -x 704 -y 480 some.wtv

That means the second stream is audio, the third stream
is video, the other streams don't matter in this case.

But if you use ffprobe, it will print out the details
of the four (or more) streams.

ffprobe some.wtv

My Winamp is 5.5552 (2009)
Here are four example ABBA tracks; all downloaded as video by yt-dlp in
default mode, then audio extracted with Pazera (an ffmpeg wrapper) set
to extract original audio without any conversion (creates .m4a files
[nearly always; I think I've had it _once_ create an .mp3 file]).

[1973] I am just a girl (downloaded 2024-3-9)

[1974] Honey Honey (downloaded 2024-6-2)

[1974] The Day Before You Came (downloaded 2024-3-9)

[1975] Intermezzo No.1 (downloaded 2024-2-14)

I suspect there is no relation between the [original release date], the
(date I downloaded), and the date the uploader created them.

All four _open_ in my WinAmp v5.9.2, but only the last one actually
_plays_. The first (probably all) plays in GoldWave, MPC-HC, VLC, WACUP,
Windows Media Player, and XMPlay. GoldWave tells me they are all 44100
Hz, stereo, with the first three being 48 kbps, the last 46. WinAmp
shows them as MPEG-4 AAC HE (and 48/48/48/47 kbps).

I notice the one that plays is the one I downloaded earliest; guessing I
downloaded them not long after they appeared (which is a very dodgy
guess), that might mean there was a change in either how the uploaders
encoded or what YouTube does to them between February and March.

BUT it is playing fine in Winamp from the downloaded file.....
(it would not connect as a "Play URL".)
(I've never tried that aspect of WinAmp.) With the above command it
created a .mp4 file, which plays fine in VLC. I've just tried it (the
.mp4) in my Winamp v5.9.2, and it appears to play - the album cover
appears, and it counts down - but no sound. Running Pazera set to "Try
extract original audio stream" created a (1,083 KB) .m4a file, which
behaves as before in my Winamp - it appears in the playlist and
scrolling window with a valid-looking duration shown, but doesn't play,
either automatically or when I click play.

I have the same attribs, except -- i got it at 128 KBPS.
Interesting. Did you specify a particular format in yt-dlp? As shown, I
just download the video (specifying no parameters), then "extract
original audio stream", and that has again given "MPEG-4 AAC HE48 kbps"
(WinAmp) or "MP4 (MPEG4 AAC). 44100 Hz, 48 kbps, stereo" (GoldWave).

Sounds great.
So does most ABBA stuff, IMO! (And the ladies are very easy on the eye
too if it happens to be a video. Sorry if that's un-PC to say these
days; I respect them as people and performers too.) But I assume you
meant the audio quality! Well, the 48 kHz .m4a sounds great to me (if I
play it in GoldWave for example). And lest you think that's just a
combination of my ageing ears and my laptop speakers, I can see it's
full-spectrum stereo (hard-limited at 16 kHz or a little above. If I
save it as a 128 kbps .mp3 it sounds and looks (spectrum) the same, but
is 2,844 KB rather than 1,083 KB; I'm always impressed at the efficiency
of the .m4a format.

Sounds great.
No, i did request audio only and an audio quality of "0" (or best, I changed it from "1" after I found
the scale was 0-9)

disregard this one -- it creates an mp3.

The previous one with the incomplete con copy created an mp4.
