Private DNS

Since I really don't understand how all this DNS stuff works, I'll ask
what is probably a dumb question.

I occasionally download TV shows that for one reason or another I have
missed recording. I have been using a program called "HideAway VPN"
from Firetrust to redirect my IP from the Net cops. If I use the
settings that Vanguard posted here for Private DNS:
- 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare)
- 208.67.222.222 (OpenDNS)
Do they do the same thing as a VPN program like HideAway, or do I
still need to keep using it for redirecting?

I told you I didn't understand what "Private DNS" was! (BFG)

This thread may be the first time I've heard it called "private DNS". I
thought it meant secure DNS.

'Private DNS' is the term used on Android. jetjock probably branched
off of the Android or Windows threads.

Why crosspost, when you can create a nice mess by copy-posting!? :-(

I was actually referring to a post by Vanguard on 3/3 in the Win 10
group where he gave settings he used for DNS. The thread in both
Android and Win 10 groups was titled "Private DNS". Win 7 actually
calls it "Preferred DNS" in the IPv4 properties. Since I'm using Win
7, I didn't think it appropriate to post in that group.

I finally figured out a way to test whether changing the DNS masked
your IP also...it doesn't! Still need a VPN for that. So, question
answered.
