I'm trying to use Disk Management to shrink a partition on the hard
drive. I have done this in the past, but now it doesn't work.

When I right click on the volume and choose shrink, the first message I
see is, querying volume for available shrink space.

Then I get this error message:

This service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because
it has no enabled devices associated with it.

The service is running.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

I have Windows 7, Vista, and Linux Mint in three partitions on the hard
drive. I installed Linux Mint three days ago.

Partition wizard free will do the trick:

Thank You. I will give it a try.

The service is "defragsvc". I can see it running in a VM
when I request shrink. Fortunately, it's in a svchost all
by itself, making it easy to identify.

Doing Properties on Disk Defragmenter, shows it is set to
Manual start. Under Dependencies, it says:

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
DCOM Server Process Launcher
RPC Endpoint Mapper

I doubt any of that is going to help you :-(

The service is launched this way, according to the entry.

C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k defragsvc

That is strange. I don't see Disk Defragmenter listed in services or
processes.

When I try to run Disk Defragmenter, it won't run.

I have Zonealarm Pro Antivirus and firewall installed. I wonder if
Zonealarm is stopping it from running?

If it is, I can't find it in the settings, and I'm not getting any type
of message when I try to run it.

Also, I installed Linux Mint 15 recently, and I know Windows doesn't
recognize the partitions. Could this be a problem?

Do you have another defragmenter program installed ?

I don't understand why that would touch such a service,
but it's about the only other thing I can think of.
Normally, I'm used to people complaining that their services
are disabled. I don't really know where the "list of services"
is stored, because it sounds like your list is missing something.

There are many entries in the Registry, but one of interest
is in CurrentControlSet.

After typing services.msc in the search box, I got a list of all the
services and their status. Disk Defragmenter was disabled.

I don't know how it got disabled, but I set it to manual, and checked to
see If I could shrink the partition, and I could.

Thanks for your help. I had no idea that Disk Defragmenter would have
anything to do with shrinking a partition.

Disk Defragmenter computes how much space is saved if
all the files "are shoved to the left side". That's the kind
of function it performs.

Disk Defragmenter cannot move one of the metadata files,
which is why shrinkage is limited to 50%. You can take a
200GB partition down to 100GB, under default conditions.
If the metadata file in question, was moved by some other
tool, then YMMV. The recommended position for the file
in question, is dead center in a partition, which is why
under default conditions, it's in a pretty lousy location.

So while in principle Windows 7 has a shrink function,
it isn't a "max shrink function". If you had 26GB of files
on a 200GB partition, it won't shrink to 26.1GB for you.
It'll only shrink to 100GB. In which case, a third party
partition manager may do better. But to do shrinkage,
it requires moving files to the left or right, so that the
partition size can be adjusted without "crushing something" :-)
