Win 7 Pro laptop to ATT router.
On ATT Uverse 50mb service.

Using Chrome

via WiFi connection
Speedtest.net reports 30mb download and 5 mb upload.

Speedof.me reports 20mb download and 5 mb upload.

via Cat5 connection
Speedtest.net reports 50mb download and 5 mb upload.

Speedof.me reports 25mb download and 5 mb upload.

Why the big difference between Speestest.net and Speedof.me?

Which is correct?

Neither is "correct" - I think you're experiencing the difference in the
traffic load between your location and the servers performing the test.
You might try ping and tracert to see the time delays at each step on
the path.

The testing is done by simply downloading a file and then uploading it.
From that they get the mean speed figures.
I don't need to say more. It's obvious that time of day, traffic, even
weather sometimes can come into play.

The upload is constant.

Try again at a different time of day.

The difference is almost certainly because they use different test
parameters. Both likely have you download (and upload) a file of known size
and they time the transfer. Meanwhile, ISP's are known to 'shape' traffic on
their network so that you get an initial burst of speed that then settles
back. Hard to say more without digging in with some tools.

Neither, and both. Your connection speed varies from one second to the next,
so these types of snapshot tests are rarely truly representative of your
connection speed, especially when you take into account that they transfer a
single file of known size and simply time it. They don't account for other
traffic on your local segment or any of multiple other variables, nor do
they try to.

Still, both are correct in a relative sense. You can use the results from
Site A to compare to earlier results from Site A, and likewise for Site B.
It's not useful to compare Site A to Site B, but each site can be compared
to itself to highlight issues, trends, etc.

To me, it's more useful to start a download of a large file and watch the
throughput in real time. That's much more accurate than any so-called speed
test sites.

My cable connection is a 20Mb down, 2Mb up. If I use Hargray's tester (which
is really OOKLA), I get near the same results as the first tests. I don't
have a location choice with it, so I have no idea where they are connecting
to test their speeds.

CAT5
Speedof.me 21.92↓ 2.00↑
Speedtest.net 20.18↓ 2.08↑

WiFi
Speedof.me 3.19↓ 2.08↑
Speedtest.net 8.72↓ 2.09↑

Those are on my Win10Pro laptop. The WiFi driver has some serious issues, so
I don't use it unless I have to.

On my desktop, the CAT5 results are
Speedof.me 21.47↓ 2.06↑
Speedtest.net 19.73↓ 2.11↑

On Speedtest.net, I have a choice of 3 locations to choose, and 2 give close
the same results, and the 3rd (Charleston) is considerably slower on
downloads(about 20% slower). I would attribute that to the lunch crowd
catching up, and regular business-as-usual traffic for this time of day.

That's very strange. It doesn't use Java, which is good since I don't have
it installed. Did you try a different browser by chance? Works fine here
with Firefox 41 and IE11.

In my experience, the following are the main determinants of d/l speed:
a) time of day. Slow just after work starts, when everybody is checking
their mail.
b) other users on the home network d/l stuff.
c) the source: some servers are just overloaded.

In any case, raw speed isn't the issue: speed of acquiring good data is
what matters. A bad line anywhere in the links between you and the
source can reduce effective speed, error correction and resending of bad
data packets take time.

I try not to worry about things I can't change, but its good to see
the confirmation that cat5 is better than wifi. That's especially
true here where the air is thick.
