Discussion:
A fully compatible 64-bit W7+ installation comparison like outdated InstallWatch Pro v2.5c?
(too old to reply)

Hello!

I tried using very old InstallWatch Pro v2.5c in 64-bit Windows 7, but
it seems to be incompatible for 64-bit stuff like its registry. It is
not detecting all the changes for that area. I assume it is because the
tool is over a decade old and isn't designed for the newer Windows
especially with 64-bits.

Does anyone of a good free software that is similiar to monitor HDD and
registry Windows. Basically, take a snapshot, install/uninstal/whatever,
and then analyze to compare what changed from its results. I don't mean
in real-time too.

Thank you in advance. :)

Ant,

Advanced Uninstaller PRO (it is free) might do what you want. I will
paste some info from that program's HELP file.

THE INSTALLATION MONITOR

Advanced Uninstaller PRO is a suite which contains several tools and
utilities. A very important tool offered by Advanced Uninstaller PRO
is the Installation Monitor.

This tool can watch a program's installation, create an installation
log containing information about everything that the setup of the
program has done, and then later completely uninstall the program.

The installation monitor can monitor an application's installation and
create an installation log. The installation log for the application
will contain detailed information about all the additions and
modifications that the application's installation (also called the
application's setup) did to your system, including:

application files and folders added by the installation on your
hard-disk entries added to your registry shortcuts added to your Start
Menu and Desktop files and folders that the application has renamed
INI files etc.

The installation monitor can carefully watch an application's
installation, and record all the changes it made to your system in an
installation log. The installation log is stored in a file on your
hard-disk.

Interesting. So it will take snapshots before and after instead of
real-time monitorings. Is there a non-CNET downloader link for the full
installer? I hate CNET's downloaders. I cannot seem to find one. :(

I doesn't work on any 64-bitwise version of Windows. The author never
added support for the mapping of the 32-bit registry entries.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms724072(v=vs.85).aspx

For many years the author promised to add support for 64-bitwise
versions of Windows. It was just static text on his web page. Now his
site doesn't even exist. The www.epsilonsquared.com site is dead. The
last update (snapshot) on www.epsilon-squared.com at the WayBackMachine
site (web.archive.org) is dated Jan 29, 2012. The last version 2.5c of
InstallWatch is dated back to March 2009 (and only supports 32-bitwise
versions of Windows).

See my review of Adv Uninstaller Pro at the link below. It will work
okay for awhile on many monitored installs and later uninstalls (to do
remnant cleanup after running the software's own uninstall) but then it
goes bezerk. See my review at:

http://www.softpedia.com/progViewOpinions/Advanced-Uninstaller-PRO-5522,.html

I would only "recommend" that tool to my enemies.

Yeah, it was a wonderful useful program for older Windows. :(

I tried it and it was not I was looking for. I don't mean real-time
monitors. I want it to make snapshots even if I am not installing,
uninstalling, etc. :(

System Explorer can take snapshots of files + registry.
Take as many snapshots as you want and compare any two.

Fantastic! Ooh, I like it especially if it is portable too. Thank you!
