Does it really have to take hours every time? :(

Thank you in advance. :)

What difference does it make? Can you not leave your machine to
Automatic updates and let it do it in its own time? Do you really have
to sit there in front of your machine watching it that it is updating?
Haven't you got anything better to do? You just need to treat it like a
kettle. You switch it on and leave it and do something else. It will
boil the water in its own time. Kettle never boils when it is being
watched!!! Try it.

I fixed this by following the instructions here:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/windows-7-update-solution/f39a65fa-9d10-42e7-9bc0-7f5096b36d0c?auth=1

You need one or two updates. But if you just install those updates,
they will take forever to install. Just like Windows Update takes.

I followed the instructions in the link above, to turn off Windows
Update and reboot before I installed these two updates. With the
Windows Update service disabled, they only took a few minutes to
install.

KB3172605 contains the fix
KB3020369 may be needed before you can install KB3172605

I can confirm that this solves the problem as I have seen this happen on
several computers. I wonder why it continues to be a problem when it
has existed for so long? One would think MS would do something with
their system for updating so it was no longer necessary.
